Author Interview: Tushar Chatterji – Behind Those Eyes
Behind Those Eyes presents the world through the perspectives of dogs. What first inspired you to explore storytelling from a canine point of view, and how did your own experiences with dogs shape these narratives?
Having had the privilege of growing up alongside our Indie, Pookie, during my childhood, I am perhaps the only one who truly knows the bond we shared. I find myself laughing even now as I think about how much I used to trouble her. I’m certain that if she could revisit those moments, she’d probably respond with a subtle growl of protest—because I know she remembers them too.
But beyond those playful annoyances were countless warm and unforgettable memories that far outweigh any emotional baggage either of us might have carried. If I were to begin recounting those moments, I suspect it might turn into another novel altogether—and I might just end up a little teary-eyed while doing so.
What many readers might find surprising is that before Pookie entered my life, I was actually afraid of dogs, regardless of their size or breed. I used to maintain a healthy distance from them out of fear of being bitten—or perhaps even gobbled up by some of the larger ones. And believe me, I’ve had my fair share of encounters with the big, daunting breeds.
But Pookie changed everything. She became my companion in every season of life—someone who saw me for who I truly was, even when I struggled to understand myself. She was fiercely protective of me, and there are plenty of stories that prove it, along with several hilarious moments that still make me smile.
So I wouldn’t call her merely an “experience.” She was far more than that. If I ever write a sequel to Behind Those Eyes, Pookie will continue to inspire it. Who knows—perhaps somewhere in her world she’s smiling and wagging not just her tail but her entire rear, knowing that the stories she inspired are no longer hidden away in my computer’s draft folder but out in the world for readers to explore.
As for the characters in the book, each of them has crossed my path at some stage in life. Some still do. But I cannot reveal exactly who they are. Only those who know me personally and have heard the anecdotes might recognize them—and I’ll leave it at that.
Each story in the book reflects emotional dimensions such as love, freedom, sacrifice, motherhood, and healing. How did you decide on these themes, and did any story evolve differently from what you initially imagined?
While shaping these stories over the past couple of years, I was quite clear about the settings for each narrative. The characters, however, took longer to evolve because I had to consider the nuances of different canines placed in very different situations.
Each dog carries unique traits, and their personalities had to be reflected in the way they respond to circumstances. Developing these layers required patience, and I was careful not to rush the process.
Interestingly, none of the stories strayed far from what I had originally envisioned. That said, certain scenes were added or removed as the journeys unfolded organically during the writing process. Throughout, I remained mindful of the emotional themes I wanted to portray so that the narrative never drifted away from its core purpose.
At times, maintaining that balance became difficult. But then again, writing—especially when it deals with emotional depths and the quiet complexities of inner life—has never been an easy pursuit.
Characters like Piku, Nala, and Rani navigate very different environments—from city streets to the Himalayas to family homes. How did you build such diverse settings while keeping the emotional voice of the dogs authentic?
Many of these settings were inspired by my own offbeat travels, explorations, and Himalayan treks. Anyone who ventures into those landscapes will inevitably encounter our four-legged companions—often in the most unexpected places.
Their friendly presence and spontaneous antics have often sparked realizations within me that I didn’t know existed.
Even back home, when I walk through my society or encounter stray dogs on the streets, I find myself observing them closely—the wagging tails, the innocent curiosity, and those deep, searching eyes. It often makes me wonder what might be going on in their hearts and minds if only they could speak.
But perhaps their silence is precisely what makes them extraordinary. Through a gentle nudge, a soft lick, or a quiet presence, they communicate a tenderness and emotional intelligence that sometimes feels far more evolved than our own.
Many of the dogs in the book form profound connections with humans without spoken language. What challenges did you face in conveying these bonds through actions and instincts?
While drafting the stories, I repeatedly revised the narrative to ensure that it remained firmly rooted in the dog’s perspective. That meant constantly asking myself how each character might interpret a particular situation, tone, or emotional shift.
Some real-life incidents also form the backbone of these stories. Although the settings and contexts were fictionalized, the underlying emotions remained authentic.
Just as humans possess diverse personalities, different dog breeds also display distinct temperaments. Their life experiences—from the moment they open their eyes—shape how they respond to the world around them.
Capturing their innocence honestly and respectfully was a conscious effort throughout the writing process. It was both challenging and deeply rewarding.
Even the decision to feature all characters on the book’s cover was deliberate. I wanted readers to see them for who they truly are—beings who embody unconditional love, devotion, and purity behind those watchful eyes.
The story of Laila and Chelsea explores the paradox of comfort and captivity. What message were you hoping to convey?
This story may provoke introspection among some readers—particularly pet parents.
At its core, the narrative raises a simple yet uncomfortable question: do we sometimes keep certain dog breeds to reflect our social status rather than their well-being?
Are these dogs truly happy? Do we understand their emotional needs? Do we notice how the changing seasons affect them, or how loneliness might shape their inner worlds?
Through Laila’s journey and Chelsea’s arrival, the story explores loneliness, companionship, and the unexpected ways in which strangers can transform our emotional landscape. Sometimes those who enter our lives quietly end up becoming our greatest allies in comfort and resilience.
Dolly’s story explores aging, motherhood, and memory. Why was it important to portray a dog’s emotional life cycle?
Through Dolly’s journey, I wanted to explore themes of femininity and motherhood.
While it is true that human and canine maternal instincts differ, there are also surprising overlaps in how living beings respond to attachment, loss, and protection.
By fictionalizing Dolly’s experience, I aimed to imagine the emotional conflicts she might face when confronted with adversity, separation, or the pain of losing someone born of her own blood. Although the story carries dramatic undertones, I approached these emotions carefully to ensure that they felt authentic when seen through Dolly’s eyes.
How did balancing a corporate career with writing influence the development of Behind Those Eyes?
Balancing the two worlds was not easy. Creative work requires discipline, patience, and consistent effort. When writing a story, it becomes essential to immerse yourself fully in your characters without constantly worrying about success or the finish line. The year 2025 remains particularly memorable for me because it was when I made the firm decision to publish my stories despite facing a turbulent phase in my professional life. In hindsight, those challenges only strengthened my resolve to bring these narratives to life.
Seeing both of my books now available worldwide and receiving positive responses from readers feels incredibly humbling. I’m deeply grateful to the characters who stayed with me through that journey—they were the ones who kept me going when I was close to giving up.
On a lighter note, I’m often asked whether I plan to leave the corporate world and become a full-time author. My answer remains somewhere in limbo—much like the final scene of Inception!
As a self-described “coffee philosopher” and mountain wanderer, how have travel and observation influenced your storytelling?
Travel and exploration have profoundly influenced my storytelling.
Those who know me well would describe me as someone who enjoys conversations and social interactions. Yet there is also a deeply reflective side of me that observes quietly.
The world rarely aligns perfectly with our expectations, and when things feel misaligned, storytelling has often become my refuge.
Many of the canine characters in Behind Those Eyes are inspired by dogs I’ve encountered during travels—whether on mountain trails, quiet countryside roads, or bustling streets. Through their stories, I wanted to capture the emotions and silent connections they form with humans, whether briefly or over a lifetime.
What do you hope readers take away from the book, especially those who may not consider themselves dog lovers?
Some readers who are not particularly fond of animals might initially assume that this book will not resonate with them.
However, the stories go beyond dogs—they explore universal emotions such as love, loss, belonging, survival, and hope. By presenting these experiences through canine perspectives, the narratives attempt to quietly reflect the psychology of human emotions as well.
If readers—dog lovers or not—momentarily step away from their own viewpoints and see the world through those silent, devoted eyes, they might discover truths they had overlooked or perhaps avoided confronting.
Do you see yourself continuing to explore animal perspectives in future stories?
Writing my debut book from a canine perspective challenged me in ways I had never anticipated. While the stories were taking shape, I constantly wondered whether I had done justice to the characters and whether readers would connect with them.
Having completed that journey, I realize that my storytelling instinct gravitates toward uncovering voices that are often unheard—the silent, the overlooked, and the emotionally complex.
Future stories may continue exploring such perspectives, though they might take different forms. They will be shaped by my travels, experiences, observations, and conversations with people from diverse backgrounds.
After all, every story, every character, and every journey carries a voice waiting to be heard.
